Jan Šépka
Šépka architekti

Hello everyone,

We invite you to the next installment of the series on Czech architecture, which takes place as part of the STOLEN GALLERY. This time, one of the most prominent architects in the Czech scene, JAN ŠÉPKA, will be introduced.
The exhibition, along with a lecture, will take place on Thursday, September 19th at 7 PM in Děčín Podmokly at the corner of Zbrojnická and Tržní streets.

Among Czech architects, there are few who extend their work into the artistic sphere. Without a doubt, we can include Jan Šépka, a Czech architect, educator, and proponent of experimental architecture, among them.

JAN ŠÉPKA (*1969)
Jan Šépka first gained significant attention in 1995 when he and his peers Petr Hájek and Jaroslav Hláska won a competition for the design of the paving of Horní náměstí in Olomouc. In 1998, he co-founded, along with Petr Hájek and Tomáš Hradečný, the now-legendary studio HŠH. Another success quickly followed when HŠH won the competition for the reconstruction of the Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum. The period of HŠH in the second half of the 90s was nothing short of explosive, as they won awards in many competitions. In 2009, HŠH disbanded, and Jan Šépka established his own office, Šépka architekti.

Since the dissolution of HŠH, we can observe a gradual creative change in Jan Šépka's work. His buildings have become more playful, cozy, and there is an increasing departure from the mainstream of contemporary architectural creation. His drawings, which also serve as the basis for his houses, take us back to childhood, when we were unafraid to express our ideas as we perceive them, without the limitations of further education. This intuitive approach to searching for essence requires significant personal courage and the will to assert one's ideas in the Czech environment.

His office produces unique authorial works characterized by their thoughtfulness and experimental nature. This direction is most evident in the projects House with Arches and House in the Orchard, which stand out from the Czech architectural scene and are impressive even on a global scale.

As always in UKG Děčín, the exhibition will be opened at the notice board, and the lecture will take place at the Bodenbach bar (about a 2-minute walk).
