Architect Adolf Loos fundamentally shaped the development of world modern architecture. On the 150th anniversary of his birth, the Museum of the City of Brno dedicates its largest exhibition this year to this Brno native. Loos became famous for his modernist buildings, aesthetics devoid of ornamentation, new spatial concepts, and sharp essays.
We will present a selection of Adolf Loos's work—primarily his contributions to his native Brno and Moravia—placing them in the context of the international style of the architectural avant-garde. In a visually engaging way, we will bring closer the ideological and expressive concepts of Loos's work. You will discover the work of a creator whose pieces were among the main carriers and representatives of contemporary global architectural trends at the time of their inception, not only in the Czech lands. The modernist dimension of Loos's work, based on an aesthetics stripped of all ornamentation, represented a civilizational leap that opened the way for the acceptance and promotion of new architecture in the European space. The exhibition will undoubtedly also provide an impulse for the socially necessary reflections on the values of modernity and will serve as a stimulus for more consistent heritage protection. You will view authentic documents, period and contemporary photographs, models, visualizations, and much more. The exhibition is part of the nationwide project program Year of Adolf Loos 2020.
