Prague - Czech Centers today begin a six-month virtual journey tracing the footsteps of one of the most significant world architects of the 20th century, Czech-born Adolf Loos. People will be able to familiarize themselves with a cross-section of his work in the Czech Republic, the realizations of his buildings, and his personality through the Facebook and Instagram platforms of the program Adolf Loos - Pioneer of Modern Living. The project will kick off today at 6:00 PM with a streamed tour of the Winternitz Villa in Prague featuring architect Adam Gebrian on Mall TV.
Czech Centers are participating in the celebrations of this year's Year of Adolf Loos, which marks the 150th anniversary of his birth in many countries.
During the holidays, streamed tours of Bauer’s villa in Brno and Loos' interiors in Plzeň will take place as part of the program. The autumn program will also involve engaging the professional public through a series of thematic lectures.
In addition, the project will offer a selection of Loos' quotes and comments from curator Filip Šenko on Facebook. It will also showcase projects being prepared in the Czech Republic as part of the Year of Adolf Loos, which includes participation from the National Heritage Institute, the Museum of the Capital City, and the National Technical Museum, among others.
Adolf Loos (1870 to 1933) was born in Brno, but spent his life moving between Vienna, Paris, and New York. He rejected the excessive ornamentation characteristic of the prevailing Art Nouveau style, advocating for starkly functional and practical residential architecture. He viewed ornamentation as a manifestation of primitivism and considered matter-of-factness and purposefulness as signs of cultural maturity. "Ornament is a crime," he proclaimed in his most famous statement.
In the Czech Republic, more than 30 buildings and interiors bear his authorship. His thoughts and realizations influenced contemporary architecture and inspired later developments and trends in architecture on an international scale.
