Brno - A new social and health complex on Červený kopec in Brno will be built according to the design of the Prague studio RANGHERKA 5. This was decided by the expert jury in the architectural competition organized for the city by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno. On Tuesday, October 2, the results were approved by the city council.
The goal of the architectural competition was to find a form for the new social and health complex and its placement on the site of the former long-term care hospital in Červený kopec. The hospital ceased operations at the beginning of this year, as most of the buildings, except for one, are from the 19th century and are in very poor condition. The authors of the winning design will retain the original Pavilion B, which they propose to renovate and use as a social and educational center with a café. Thus, the building maintains the original historical footprint on the site.
The jury was particularly impressed by the simple urban planning solution without the need for radical interventions in the surroundings. The complex consists of three new buildings, which are loosely integrated into the park environment. On the ground floor, they are connected by a large entrance hall, which also functions as an indoor square. The hall smoothly transitions into a central paved piazzetta and, together with the historic pavilion, creates an interesting public space.
The city announced a narrow one-phase architectural competition for the design in June of this year. The jury invited three participants, while a further twelve studios applied, from which the jurors selected five participants based on their portfolios. The evaluation of the designs was anonymous. The city will now prepare an investment plan, after which it will negotiate with the authors of the winning design about the contract for the development of project documentation. The estimated investment costs for the project are approximately 300 million Czech crowns.
