Prague - Prague 6 has selected the winning design for the Petynka swimming pool in a student competition. The planned reconstruction and extension of the area, which the city hall is preparing, will be inspired by this design. The city company Sneo, which is in charge of the project preparation, informed about this in a press release today. The course of the competition was criticized by the Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA) and the local opposition.
Of the nine proposals from students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the most successful was the extension with a wavy walkable roof, which combines wood, metal, and glass.
The swimming pool is expected to be transformed by the end of 2019, with an investment of around 170 million crowns. Work will begin next year. The city hall did not choose the route of an architectural competition for time and financial reasons. It is said that the competition would have delayed and increased the costs of the project. Architects from the ČKA are bothered by the fact that only students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at ČVUT could participate in the announced student competition and that there were not enough independent experts on the jury.
The new hall will connect to the existing swimming pool. In addition to a twenty-five-meter pool, sauna, and children's pool, it will also include a restaurant that will serve visitors to both the hall and the outdoor area. A unique wave pool for surfing is expected to be included.
