We cordially invite you to another lecture from the series Collegium historiae artium, which will be delivered by Rostislav Švácha (Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences) on the topic of The Book by František Žákavec about Dušan Jurkovič from 1929: Czechoslovakism in the Historiography of Architecture.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 4:30 PM in the meeting room (Hall 117) of the Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, Husova 4, Prague 1.
How did the field of art history help stabilize the democratic regime of the First Republic? To support its key political idea, Czechoslovakism, Czech professor František Žákavec from Comenius University in Bratislava attempted this with a book about the architect Dušan Jurkovič, who was well known among both Czechs and Slovaks, published in 1929. Jurkovič himself had Czechoslovakist views, thus providing a good foundation for Žákavec's political intentions. Despite this, Žákavec's efforts did not achieve success. The lecture will strive to explain why that happened.
