In the November lecture of the Kruh association, two fields will intersect: film and architecture. As part of the Dialogue series, architect Petr Hájek and renowned film director Jan Hřebejk will present together. They will discuss interdisciplinary collaboration and inspiration, as well as the recycling of materials and elements in both architecture and film. The lecture on the topic “How does architecture influence film and film influence architecture?” will take place on Thursday, November 25, at the Světozor cinema in Prague.
Czech architect and professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University Petr Hájek has appeared in Kruh since the very beginning of the lecture cycles, in 2002 with the HSH studio. He is among the innovative architects of today, and every one of his designs sparks discussions within the field and also among the public. He has long been engaged in methods of reconstruction, recycling, and transformation in architecture. In the November lecture, he will address not only these topics but also his relationship to other fields. In the Kruh dialogue, he will invite the renowned director of popular Czech films, Jan Hřebejk. Together, they will discuss interdisciplinary collaboration, how film and architecture influence each other, and the role architecture plays in film and vice versa.
“Kruh has long been striving for the intertwining and inspiration across disciplines. Film is one of the media that inspire architects, while film productions use architecture to create scenes, but at the same time they can create a more coherent idea of architecture than a composed photograph,” adds Marcela Steinbachová, the founder of the Kruh association, on the topic of the lecture.
Petr Hájek (1970, Karlovy Vary) is an architect of the middle generation. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University (1995) and the School of Architecture at AVU (1998) in Prague. In 1998, he co-founded the architectural office HSH architects and in 2009 the office Petr Hájek ARCHITECTS. He is a co-author of many prominent realizations: Horní náměstí in Olomouc, Jiřské náměstí at Prague Castle, the national pavilion La Biennale di Venezia 2016, KCEV, the reconstruction of the Water Tower in Prague 7, the DOX+ Centre for Contemporary Art, the terraces of the Lucerna Palace, the Summer Scene of Voděrádky, and others. For his work, he has been repeatedly awarded both domestic and foreign prizes. He serves as a teacher at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague, where he has been appointed professor, and at the VŠVU in Bratislava.
Jan Hřebejk is a renowned Czech film, theater, and television director. In 1991, he completed his studies in screenwriting and dramaturgy at FAMU, where he directed two short films in his own production during his studies at the end of the 1980s. Since 1997, he has also been engaged in theater directing (among his most famous productions is "Výstřely na Broadwayi"). He has realized a number of audience-successful and award-winning feature films and series, including "Šakalí léta," "Pelíšky," and "Učitelka." One of his best film achievements is considered to be the film "Musíme si pomáhat," which received a total of 6 Czech Lions and even an Oscar nomination.
The dialogue between Petr Hájek and Jan Hřebejk will take place on Thursday, November 25, 2021, at 7:00 PM at the Světozor cinema, and will occur according to currently valid COVID measures. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Světozor cinema.
