An important connecting element between the individual floors of apartments, offices, or houses - the staircase. When choosing one, it is necessary to consider the specifics of each space so that the final appearance of the staircase meets all functional and design requirements.

It is clear that before the actual realization of the staircase, it is important to decide what function it will serve in the space and how frequently it will be used. From that, in collaboration with the investor, the choice of the specific type of staircase and its dimensions follows. "The recommended standard width of the staircase ranges from 80 to 100 cm. However, we also accommodate non-standard requirements in projects, so for us, a maximum width of up to 130 cm and a minimum of 60 cm is possible. As for the standard height of the stair treads, it ranges from 16 to 20 cm," says Petr Paksi, Sales Director of J.A.P., a manufacturer of interior stairs.

The specific type of staircase also determines the shape of the exit space. "For straight or quarter-turn stairs, a rectangular exit space is ideal. In contrast, for spiral staircases, square or circular floor plans are suitable," adds Petr Paksi.

In practice, there are four basic types of staircases to choose from - stringer, spiral, segmented, and side stringer staircases. They differ from each other in shape and method of anchoring.

Stringer staircase
This model is characterized by its method of attachment - the individual steps are anchored directly into the wall without the need for a visible supporting part. This makes the staircase appear airy and it literally floats through the space.

Spiral staircase
It consists of a dominant central column, which can have various atypical shapes, such as a spiral, and is anchored in the floor. The individual steps then extend from it. It is suitable for spaces where space-saving is necessary. Due to its unique appearance and space-saving design, spiral staircases are an ideal choice for modern loft apartments.

Segmented staircase
It consists of individual parts, called segments, from which it is possible to create exactly the shape that each specific space requires. Generally, the most commonly chosen shapes are "L" or "U" shaped stairs.

Suitable for customers who want to avoid clunky-looking stair constructions. The side stringer staircase is anchored to the supporting wall, floor, and ceiling. The staircase gives a light impression in the interior.

In terms of staircase materials, the clear trend is the timeless combination of wood and glass. Hardwoods are used for making the treads, and safety tempered glass railings create an airy impression in the interior. "For all our interior staircases, we manufacture treads from beech, oak, maple, or ash. The choice of the specific type of wood is therefore entirely up to the customer," adds Petr Paksi in conclusion.
