The company JANOŠÍK OKNA-DVEŘE recently introduced innovative RAND windows that defy all standards. RAND is now achieving success in modern architecture across the Czech Republic. We reached out to Jakub Janošík, who is behind the design and concept, to shed light on their advantages.

What prompted the creation of RAND windows?
RAND windows are a response for fans of modern architecture who want wooden windows but find that the stereotypical eurowindows, which have not changed in appearance for years, do not suit their homes. The concept was clear - to design wooden windows that will set the trend in contemporary architecture. Of course, considering top thermal insulation properties.

What distinguishes RAND windows?
“Gott ist im Detail (God is in the detail)” was a favorite saying of the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. This holds true doubly for RAND windows - they are simple yet expressive in detail. The irrationality of shapes has transformed into clean lines aligned in flush surfaces, allowing the beauty of wood grain to shine.

I dare say that classic eurowindows can completely spoil the character of modern minimalist homes. Curved and angled shapes simply do not fit.

In what specific ways are they different from classic windows?

The most significant difference from classic eurowindows is the wing integrated into the frame. This opened the door to many possibilities. From the exterior, you only see the window frame in a uniform plane without transitions. This allowed us to eliminate two robust rounded drip caps and replace them with one subtle, also squared shape. This enabled us to produce extraordinarily slim frames, thereby proportionally larger glass areas. This is particularly important for passive houses, which require as much sunlight to enter the home through the windows as possible.

  • Thanks to the integration of the wing behind the frame, we can glaze the insulating glass from the outside of the wing, and there is no need for glazing beads that disrupted the uniform planes of the wing. This also removed sharp joints from the glazing beads (45°). The lines of the wing thus run parallel to the frame joints and are not disrupted by other angles. It is also worth mentioning the method of glass installation, which is possible by positioning it from the exterior of the wing. The last pane of glass can thus be extended over the frame of the wing, which creates one of the beautiful details of RAND windows upon opening.
  • Due to the wing integrated behind the frame, RAND windows have another major advantage in the possibility of embedding the window into the building facade. You can extend the facade right up to the edge of the frame, and then from the exterior, you only see a clean glass surface. This makes RAND wooden windows maintenance-free, as the wooden frames are concealed within the facade. This allows for the use of interior paints on the windows, which offer far more options than thick-coated ones intended for exterior use. This variant is ideal for combination with our frameless fixed (non-opening) NOFRAME windows.
  • A significant influence on the more modern character of the window undoubtedly came from the change from rounded edges to sharper ones. From the interior, the profile has a minimal radius of R1.5, and from the exterior R3, for better adhesion of the paint on the edge against weather conditions.
  • We have completely concealed the visible parts of the fittings within the windows so that they do not disrupt their appearance in any way. The pinnacle of a clean look can be achieved with the help of special fittings for flush windows. Thanks to this, the window sash can align perfectly with the frame in one plane.

Details can also be played with, and for perfect harmonization of the window, you can choose from various types of wood, finishes, sealing colors, silicone, spacer bars, and drip caps. A nice handle also has a big impact on the overall appearance of the window. Currently, the biggest hit is the Minimal handle from the Czech manufacturer M&T.

“Seeing it once is better than hearing about it a hundred times” is the second proverb that perfectly encapsulates RAND windows.
