Awards for exceptional design were given in Germany. The local manufacturer of aluminum and plastic systems for windows, doors, and facades, the brand Schüco, won awards for three of its products in the international German Design Award 2018 competition.
In the "Building and Elements" category, a 43-member expert jury awarded the gold prize to the door system with a touch screen Schüco ADS 90.SI SimplySmart Design Edition. The award for Special Mention went to the subtle facade system Schüco FWS 35 PD. In the "Energy" category, the Schüco VentoLife ventilation system won first place. A total of over 5000 applications were evaluated.
Entrance doors from the Schüco ADS 90.SI SimplySmart Design Edition system with a glowing handle
This is an aluminum system with a construction depth of 90mm that meets high expectations for aesthetics and functionality of door constructions in residential housing. The attractive entrance door is characterized by a lighted recess of the handle, flush-mounted into the door profile, and a double-sided overlapping aluminum filling. The door with the handle visually blends perfectly and forms a homogeneous surface when viewed from the outside. The processing is not disrupted even by the integrated modular unit Schüco Door Control System with a touch screen for intelligent opening, closing, and securing the entrance. The user intuitively controls the door through the interface, as simply as using a smartphone. In addition to controlling on a 4-inch touch screen, users can also open and check the door remotely. At the user's request, a numerical keypad, fingerprint reader, house number, doorbell, or name list with doorbells, or a communication system with a video camera and door opener can be installed into the control panel made of black glass, elegantly aligned with the door profile. The manufacturer also introduced additional options for keyless entry, such as access through facial recognition or Bluetooth technology.
Post-and-Beam Aluminum Facade System Schüco FWS 35 PD for Elegant Glass Areas
The slim, filigree design of profiles with a visible width of only 35 mm creates a maximally transparent facade. The structure is equipped with a ventilation and drainage system and is secured against burglary up to class RC 3. For passive houses, the manufacturer offers a highly thermally insulated variant "SI = Super Insulation," certified by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt. In addition to fixed frameless "walls," this slim facade allows combinations with electrically opening windows and doors of the same visible width or the construction of a subtle structural connection in the corners. The only limiting factor in design is the statics. Elegant large-area glazing is suitable for the windows of luxury shops, facades of multi-story office buildings, and glass walls of representative residences. Minimalist profiles guarantee both an unobstructed view into the interior and an unrestricted panoramic view of the surroundings, depending on the character of the building.
Schüco VentoLife Ventilation Unit
The ventilation system integrated into the window profile features a multi-level high-performance air filter, which cleans the incoming air of unwanted impurities - dust and other particles harmful to human health, which are mainly found in cities. During recirculation, the air inside the room is cleaned so efficiently that no other filtering units are needed. The smallest particles, allergens, and harmful compounds under one micrometer are filtered from the air with an efficiency of 99.5%. Highly effective air purification is achieved through a closely folded electrostatically charged polypropylene membrane, which is exceptionally durable and powerful. A layer made from a mixture of activated carbon and potassium permanganate eliminates unpleasant odors, bacteria, and toxic substances. The filter, which is easy to replace, is changed depending on use and air pollution levels every six to nine months.
The supply of outdoor air into the room is ensured operationally through a sensor-controlled air damper (monitored for humidity, solid particle pollution level, volatile organic compound pollution level). The electrically controlled air/recirculation damper protects against drafts and rain even when in the open position. It automatically closes if the air quality in the room is unsatisfactory. The LED display provides current information on operational status and the quality of the surrounding air, and the light automatically turns off at night. The unit, which can be integrated into selected window and facade systems by Schüco both internally and externally, horizontally and vertically, is suitable for residential and commercial projects. It operates with minimal energy requirements.
The German Design Award, awarded since 2012, has quickly become a prestigious showcase of exceptional design. The expert jury recognizes pioneering projects that contribute to the development of unique design in Germany and internationally. This competition presents trends and advances design. The competition is backed by the German Design Council, a leading German center for global design. The design council, established by the German parliament and sponsored by German industry, has supported companies in brand development and design for over 60 years. It is responsible for presenting German design as an economic factor, plays a significant role in shaping design culture, and facilitates the transfer of knowledge and skills in brand building and design. www.german-design-award.com
