On Thursday, February 23, 2017, at 5:00 PM, a lecture titled "About Wenceslas Square" by Ing. arch. Zdeněk Lukeš will take place in the Mánes Hall of the Jalta Hotel (Wenceslas Square 45), dedicated to the architecture of the most famous square in Prague (and its further development).
The lecture will be followed in the coming weeks by a guided walk around Wenceslas Square and its nearby surroundings for all architecture enthusiasts (the date will be specified).
The space of Wenceslas Square - one of the central spaces in the heart of Prague with a rich history - has undergone numerous transformations in the 20th century, and hopefully, further changes await it in the near future. The square also features several very interesting buildings - from the oldest ones - baroque to examples of historicism, secession, modernism, art deco, functionalism, or even postmodernism. The square is connected with many names of prominent architects, such as Schulz, Ohmann, Kotěra, Bendelmayer, Dryák, Pfeiffer, Králíček, Gočár, Janák, Machoň, Stockar, Kysela. It is a unique museum of architectural styles. The speaker had the opportunity to live and work at Wenceslas Square and is happy to share his observations with the visitors.
Zdeněk Lukeš is a Czech architect, architectural historian, expert publicist, and university educator. He is the author and co-author of many articles and books, lectures, critical works, and educational texts. Since the early 1990s, he has been active at Prague Castle. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University. He irregularly organizes "dog walks for architecture," educational meetings for those interested in architecture. (Note: The walk around Wenceslas Square and its surroundings is planned for spring this year; we will inform you in time.)
