On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 5:00 PM, a lecture by sociologist Slavomíra Ferenčuhová from FSS MUNI will take place in room B510 at the Faculty of Architecture of VUT in Brno, Poříčí 5. She will reflect on how sociology, especially urban sociology, reacted to the work of Le Corbusier, and how his modernist visions became an example of expert planning and spatial determinism for sociologists - that is, the effort to influence social life through the shaping of space.

Le Corbusier, with his designs for modernist family homes, redefined the everyday processes of families. With his interwar visions of cities, he aimed to determine the functioning of million-strong societies, and in the second half of the last century, he succeeded in realizing an urban plan in Chandigarh, India. Le Corbusier sought to define the ideal person for his “machines for living” through the use of the “modulor.” Slavomíra Ferenčuhová will attempt to reveal how all this has reflected in the lives of the users of Le Corbusier's buildings, and how his vision still influences today's society.

Mgr. Slavomíra Ferenčuhová, Ph.D. studied sociology at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University (1999-2002 BSP, 2002-04 MSP, 2004-10 DSP), where she currently works as an assistant professor, focusing on teaching urban sociology and urban studies. She also works for the Czech Academy of Sciences, Institute of Sociology, in the department of "Local and Regional Studies".
