Architect who went through a number of modern architectural movements. Otakar Novotný studied at the Czech Technical University and worked as an assistant to Jan Kotěra. His first realizations are influenced by Dutch brick architecture and also geometric modernism. He also experimented with cubism, through which he arrived at purism and functionalism. During the interwar period, he worked pedagogically at the Academy of Fine Arts and eventually as a professor at the UMPRUM (1929), where he served as rector from 1935 to 1937. His most fruitful period was his membership in SVU Mánes (of which he was also a long-time chairman), for which he realized an impressive functionalist building S. V. U. Mánes (1928–1930) on the banks of the Vltava in Prague.
You can learn more about this significant architect and chairman of SVU Mánes at a lecture by Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta at Trmal Villa on Monday, March 11, 2019, at 6:00 PM.
