PETRA ŠPAČKOVÁ:
The Process of Residential Suburbanization in the Czech Republic:
How Life Is on the Edge of the City
Monday, December 10, 2012, at 19:00 at Divadlo 29 / Sv. Anežky České 29, Pardubice
The process of residential suburbanization is a new phenomenon that has significantly transformed some Czech cities since the mid-1990s. The (media) image of the development of satellite towns and the migration to the suburban areas is, however, associated with a number of so-called suburban myths – stereotypically reproduced yet often empirically unverified. Petra Špačková will present the results of long-term research by the Urban and Regional Laboratory team in her presentation. At the level of the Czech Republic, she will focus on the scope, development, and distribution of the process of residential suburbanization. Using the example of the Prague Metropolitan Region and its selected specific locations, she will demonstrate the consequences of the suburbanization process for life in this type of urban periphery and also the different approaches to further development of the area.
Petra Špačková, Ph.D. graduated in social geography from the Faculty of Science at Charles University and currently works there as an assistant researcher within the URRlab (Urban and Regional Laboratory) research team. In her research, she focuses mainly on the study of the suburbanization process, the social environment of urban, suburban, and rural locations, and social deprivation.
Admission: 50 CZK
Organized by the Terra Madoda association in collaboration with Divadlo 29 as part of the OFFCITY 2012 project. This project is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the statutory city of Pardubice, and the Czech Architecture Foundation.
MATĚJ AL-ALI, PETR DUB, TOMÁŠ MORAVEC: THE PATH OF COURAGE
Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 19:00 at Divadlo 29
The presentation of the Path of Courage, an artistic project by the author trio Matěj Al-Ali, Petr Dub, Tomáš Moravec, elegantly follows the December lecture by social geographer Petra Špačková focused on suburbanization. The Path of Courage aims to artistically capture the modern urbanization of two satellite villages, Psáry and Dolní Jirčany, near Prague.
The path was realized as part of the CULBURB project – Cultural Acupuncture Treatment for Suburb, which monitors the situation and possible development of contemporary Central European suburbs.
