Mart van Schijndel

The Van Schijndel House in Utrecht is a showcase construction by a single creator. Architect Mart van Schijndel designed this house for himself, and it was completed in 1992. The design encompassed the form of the house as well as its interiors, from furniture to the smallest details. Due to the architect's clear vision and the key concept of light, color, space, and furniture design, the house is valued as a unique example of the so-called gesamtkunstwerk. On a total of 175 m², Van Schijndel created a very impressive space by working with light, colors, and materials. In 1999, the Van Schijndel House was listed as a significant historical building for its notable artistic value, making it the youngest architectural monument in the Netherlands.

In 1995, the building received the Rietveld Prize for its innovative design. The jury evaluated the house as follows: “Where a glass storage facility once stood, in an inner courtyard closed off from the outside world, architect Mart van Schijndel executed a virtuoso sculptural design for his own house. With this building, Van Schijndel demonstrates extensive spatial orientation. He also experiments with technical innovations. For instance, the glass windows and doors have no hinges but hang on a silicone suspension system. In addition to his technically-oriented carpentry experimental passion, the house radiates a search for previously unknown experiences of space. Furthermore, it is remarkable and exemplary to see how much spatial quality the building generates in a location that is completely surrounded on all sides.”

In the lecture, Natascha Drabbe will present architect Mart Van Schijndel and his house, followed by a short film about the Van Schijndel House with commentary from the architect about its design, inspiration, and connection to Gerrit Rietveld. The organization Iconic Houses and its activities will also be introduced.

The lecture takes place on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 5:00 PM in the technical floor of the Tugendhat villa (the villa tour is not part of the lecture). The lecture will be in English and will not be translated.
Admission is 100 CZK; students and seniors 50 CZK
Reservations for the lecture are required at tel: +420 515 511 015 / 017 or by email: info@tugendhat.eu (limited capacity of 70 people).

Mart van Schijndel is one of the few architects in the Netherlands who has successfully combined innovative modernism based on industry with distinctive postmodern features. Van Schijndel showcased his ability to work with technical innovations and also a talent for maximizing the use of light and space as architectural elements. His own hidden house on Pieterskerkhof street in Utrecht is a beautiful and spatial expression of this. The house can be compared to lasting inspirational examples of international architectural history of the twentieth century.
