Brno - The area in front of the main train station in Brno should change so that people can pass through more easily and feel safer. The discussion about modifications to the area will be initiated by the Greens. They are based on several studies conducted by university students, in which people described the area as overcrowded, chaotic, unclear, neglected, and unattractive. According to the mayor's deputy, Martin Ander (SZ), the changes arising from the discussion should be implemented as soon as possible. They will not involve massive construction interventions, but changes that will not be expensive, he told reporters today.
According to student surveys, the most significant issue for people is the poor accessibility of the area. Crossing from one end of the platform to the other often requires strong nerves and patience due to the number of people and barriers. Catching trams in such conditions is difficult.
"There is indeed far too much railing, and at least the area in front of the entrance to the station building could be adjusted to allow direct passage," said Ander. According to him, it is unreasonable to expect passengers to travel through underground corridors to get from the main station building to a platform just a few dozen meters away, as that would be the most appropriate route. "That is such a complicated route that even a two-meter fence wouldn’t deter people," he noted. He believes that the railings only complicate the situation.
Similarly, regarding the shelters on the platforms, the deputy argues that the solid sides with advertising billboards should be removed. More subtle constructions would obstruct movement less.
According to Ander, other corners of Brno also deserve a discussion about changes. He is negotiating to have the "Urban Interventions" exhibition, which was successfully organized by architects in Bratislava and later in Prague, also take place in Brno. It generated an extraordinary response in Slovakia, and the municipal administration adopted some of the ideas on how to handle public space.
Ander is in talks with the authors of the idea, architects Matúš Vallo and Oliver Sadovský. "Such an event could be launched here at the beginning of September," he stated. Brno architecture students should participate in agreement with their school. For the exhibition, experts will select a public space and propose adjustments. They should always be simple and easily attainable. "The goal is not to come up with fanciful ideas," the deputy added.
