Pardubice – The Green Gate in Pardubice will have a facade again, as recommended by experts to prevent the degradation of its masonry. The gate has stood without plaster for over 100 years. Radim Jelínek, spokesman for the city hall, told ČTK this.

The councilors approved the plastering of the building on Thursday with 20 votes, which is the narrowest majority. "This does not mean that it will be plastered immediately. Documentation will be prepared, projects will be developed, and financing must be secured," Jelínek said today.

Standing at 59 meters, the Green Gate is a frequent motif on postcards as a historical landmark and is one of the entry points to the historical center. The structure, which includes the tower and the foregate, dates back to 1507. It was struck by a fire in 1538. After the repair, it was raised by 13 meters. Since 1542, it has had its current form of roofing. In 1912, the city, in the spirit of historical purism, removed the plaster from the gate at the suggestion of architect Bóža Dvořák.

In recent years, the city hall has had the Green Gate repaired twice. It ensured, among other things, its statics. However, experts believe that the gate degrades without plaster. Inside, the masonry is cold, and in summer it heats up on the surface, which damages it. The plaster should protect the gate from weather fluctuations. According to experts, masonry conservation is inappropriate; it is labor-intensive for cleaning the stone surface and is not effective. It must be repeated in a few years.
