Pardubice – The Pardubice city council today supported the restoration of the Green Gate. Its original appearance will return if the councilors agree. The cultural monument has been without plaster for over 100 years. The masonry was exposed at that time in a historicizing spirit. This was stated to ČTK by Deputy Mayor Petr Kvaš (ODS).
"In the council, the prevailing opinion was to return the Green Gate to its original form, to plaster it. The gate is on the agenda of the council meeting on March 4. Then assessments, projects, and fundraising for reconstructions will take place again," Kvaš said.
The councilors selected from two options, plastering or a conservation method for the masonry. The authors of the expert assessments recommend plastering. According to them, the conservation method is unsuitable. It is demanding in terms of cleaning the surface of the stone and is not effective.
"The building would retain its current appearance and would be protected from weather influences, but this would not solve the temperature differences in the masonry, which is related to its degradation," said Mayor Martin Charvát (ANO).
The gate was plastered until 1912. The change was proposed by architect Bóža Dvořák in the spirit of the historical purism of the time. A walkway was also created in the upper parts, which had not been there before. The gate dates back to 1507. After the fire in 1538, it was raised by approximately 13 meters. Since 1542, it has had its current form of roofing.
In previous years, the city hall had the town's landmark repaired twice. They secured, among other things, its statics. The plaster will protect the monument from weather fluctuations. "The skin of this Renaissance monument has been deteriorating for a long time. The outer plaster on all faces of the tower from the crown of the widened base to the walkway should be restored, while the lower parts of the southern facade with remnants of the demolished guardhouse would be repaired using the conservation method," said Charvát.
