Prague - Prague city councilors today approved a public tender for the development of a project for a new transport terminal at the Smíchov railway station. According to the approved document, the tender should start in September, and the winner will be known this November. The project will cost a maximum of 160 million crowns excluding VAT. A bus terminal, a P+R parking lot, and the current footbridge will also be moved so that it can lead directly to the platform will be built in Smíchov. The total construction costs are estimated at about two billion crowns.
"The main benefit of the project... is the unification of the current transport hubs in Smíchov, faster and easier transfers between different modes of transport, and the improvement of the connection between Prague and its surroundings," the document states.
The contract will be for comprehensive project and engineering services. The selected company will provide, for example, the necessary documents for the site decision, issuance of a zoning decision, or obtaining a construction permit.
The terminal will be built gradually. First, a P+R parking garage, including a bus terminal on the roof of the new building, is to be constructed. Connecting roads will also be created. In the second phase, a portion above the railway station's platforms will be built. This will be used to increase the capacity of the bus terminal and will allow buses to be moved from the Na Knížecí terminal to this new terminal.
The new terminal will be built on the current railway station's grounds and will be connected to the railway station, metro, and the upcoming construction of a new district called Smíchov City. The main building of the Smíchov railway station will also be restored to its original form.
Changes will also affect the Na Knížecí locality. Public transport buses will continue to operate here, but they will not have a terminus or parking lot. The number of buses terminating at Na Knížecí is expected to gradually decrease to about half. A new public building is planned to be constructed on part of the current bus station. In the past, there was talk of the city hall possibly having one of its offices here. However, no specific proposals have been approved.
The Smíchov City project on the site of the former Smíchov freight station could start construction at the end of this year. The first phase concerns 25,000 square meters and includes three separate buildings near the Na Knížecí bus station. They are expected to be completed in two years. The project covers a total of 216,099 square meters of land and could be completed in approximately 12 to 15 years. Up to 3,300 people are expected to live there.
