Telč - The State Castle in Telč is preparing for restoration worth more than 200 million crowns. It should begin at the end of the year. This year's tourist season still features castle tour circuits without restrictions, only the gallery is closed, castle custodian Bohumil Norek told journalists today. The castle will be approximately half accessible even during the repairs, which will last until 2022.
Workers are already clearing parts of the castle area that will be modified. "We have cleared 50 percent, the rest remains to be done by autumn. We had to turn the gallery into a storage area; we have to move the items somewhere," said the custodian. According to Norek, the heritage conservationists will still select a contractor for the investment funded by European funds. If all goes according to plan, work could begin in November.
The project includes the establishment of a castle museum, the creation of a storage area in the former castle brewery, and the construction of a new visitor center. Restorers will focus on the paintings, furnishings, and the ceiling of the Knights' Hall, which is, according to the custodian, in poor condition. The renewal will also address technical networks.
Last year, the castle was visited by around 100,000 people. This year's attendance is, according to the custodian, somewhat weaker, which he believes may have been influenced by the gallery's closure. "But we are at the beginning of the season; we will see what it does," he said. From July 5 to 7, there will be a craft fair in the castle courtyard, and on July 27 and 28, the castle and park will host the second edition of the festival of fencing groups organized by Paridon. From July 26 to August 11, there will be concerts of the traditional festival Holidays in Telč in the castle courtyard.
