Pec pod Sněžkou (Trutnovsko) - The building of the old post office has definitively disappeared from the top of Sněžka today. Its owner, Tomáš Trnka, had it dismantled; construction workers will reassemble it near the Central Bohemian town of Sedlec - Prčice. The object will continue to serve its original purpose, Trnka told ČTK today, who purchased it from its original owner and operator of the new Czech post office, Jaroslava Skrbková. "I was sorry that the old post office would end up somewhere in a landfill. No one else was able to do it, so I took it upon myself, even though I have enough worries of my own," said Trnka, who works as a developer. The old Czech post office stamped its first postcard in September 1899. The historic object from the second half of the 19th century was dismantled down to individual boards and beams; each piece was marked with a seven-digit code, according to which it will be reassembled on Javorová Rock near the village of Monínec, which belongs to Sedlec - Prčice. "We transported it from Sněžka on two Tatra trucks to Poland, where everything was transferred to a truck that will take the post office back to the Czech Republic," Trnka said. The building will continue to function as a post office, providing refreshments for tourists and creating a small museum of the post office itself. Trnka hopes to resume operations by the end of summer. At the summit of the highest Czech mountain, a new post office was built according to the design by architects Martin Rajniš and Patrik Hoffman. Construction work began in the summer of 2006, and the building was officially opened last August. The modern structure is made of wooden parts reinforced with steel rods and is complemented by glass panels that cover hydraulically controlled wooden shutters. The removal of the old post office building was one of the conditions for the approval of the new structure.
