Sedlec-Prčice (Příbramsko) - A wooden post office has opened for tourists today on Javorová Skála near the Monínec resort in the Sedlčany region, which previously stood for 150 years at the summit of Sněžka. After its operation ceased, it faced the threat of destruction. A group of enthusiasts therefore disassembled the building and rebuilt it in a picturesque location on the border of Southern and Central Bohemia, where this allegedly oldest post office in the Czech Republic will again serve its original purpose. "It is the oldest post office in the Czech Republic, and it was also built at the highest place in the Czech Republic. So there are quite a few 'bests' to ensure it doesn't end up in the furnace," said Tomáš Trnka to ČTK, whose idea it was to move the wooden structure from Sněžka. "We agreed with my friends on who would do what to make the idea a reality, and from June 11 to 15, we disassembled the building on Sněžka, labeling its individual parts with codes so we could reassemble it here in July," he recounted. Transport was not easy at all, as you can only access Sněžka by car on the Polish side. "We loaded the individual parts onto trucks of Polish carriers, who transported them to Poland. There, they were reloaded onto trucks of a Czech carrier, who then moved them here," Trnka described. On Javorová Skála, at the site of the local campsite, the wooden structure was successfully reassembled within four days. However, the roofing, gutters, and some beams are no longer original, as about a fifth of the building disintegrated in the hands of its rescuers. "Today, the post office is 20 percent completely new and 80 percent is the old post office that stood on Sněžka," Trnka added, who invested hundreds of thousands of crowns into the project. "It was demanding, but at the same time, such work not only takes away from you but also gives, so it was a source of many interesting insights," he noted. Today, dozens of people, including the priest from nearby Jistebnice, Norbert František Vehovský, who blessed it, did not miss the opening of the historical post office. "This old lady was moved from Sněžka to our region, and I would like to give her the blessing to be a symbol of communication for those who meet here," he pronounced. The mayor of Jistebnice, Vladimír Mašek, pointed out that the wooden structure is now located at an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level. "In terms of the altitude of Sněžka, it is of course incomparable, but in that the post office is again directed to higher areas, there is a certain symbolism - the symbolism of tourism," he believes. Trnka also reminded that this area had been touristically dead for many years, and only in the last decade have some entrepreneurs relocated their activities here. "Be it the Monínec ski area, bison farming, a golf course, and more. So I thought that the post office could be a piece in this mosaic," he pointed out.
