Olomouc - The Flora Exhibition Grounds has begun the reconstruction of the historical orangery in the Smetana Gardens of Olomouc. Due to poor technical condition, it was at risk of collapse. The first phase of the repair of this national cultural monument will cost approximately two million crowns, said Jiří Uhlíř, the director of the Flora Exhibition Grounds to ČTK. Workers have started restoration work on the orangery, which is located next to the Fontána restaurant in Rudolf's Alley, to prevent the activity of wood-destroying fungi and other wood-degrading organisms. "The first phase, costing just under two million crowns, also includes work on the static stabilization of the building, preparatory work before restoration activities, hydro-insulation, and laying a new roof. It will be completed by the end of May at the latest," Uhlíř stated. The project is financed from the reserves of the Flora Exhibition Grounds in Olomouc, with additional funding from the Olomouc Region. The costs of the overall reconstruction of the orangery have not yet been quantified by the exhibition grounds. According to Uhlíř, the final decision on the future use of the monument-protected building will be made only after the repairs. The management of Flora is considering creating a center for leisure activities for visitors to the park in the orangery. The national cultural monument, which previously served for the wintering of delicate trees, was built according to the Versailles model. It was relocated to the park in the center of Olomouc in 1886 from nearby Velká Bystřice.
