BRNO - The famous Brno passage Jalta opposite the New Town Hall is set to become the new headquarters for the officials of the Brno city council next year. The building, which is currently owned by a private owner, is intended to be acquired by the city in exchange for two lucrative city houses in the center, land in Brno's Masaryk Quarter, and an additional payment of ten million crowns. "Our effort is aimed at concentrating officials who are currently scattered throughout the city," said Deputy Mayor Miroslav Hošek to ČTK today.
The idea of acquiring the well-known building with the Jalta passage on Dominican Square from a private owner was previously criticized by the Brno opposition, especially the CSSD. The Social Democrats particularly disliked that they learned about the plan from the media. They labeled the city's management's approach as a hidden privatization. The original proposal included an exchange for four buildings in downtown Brno and an additional payment of nearly 50 million crowns. "A new document is now prepared, which will first be discussed by the property committee," Hošek stated.
The main drawback of the plan to use the Jalta passage for the needs of officials was the lack of parking spaces around the building. "This problem could be solved by the planned construction of a parking lot on Husova Street at the rear of the building, so people would not have to drive into the center," Hošek said. According to him, the parking lot should be completed next year. He noted that earlier usage of the passage for city council needs is not realistic anyway, as the building will need to be modified. Hošek estimated the costs of reconstructing the building at 30 million to 50 million crowns. Tereza Fojtová
