Prague - A new entrance area will be created by the Fata Morgana greenhouse in the western part of the Prague botanical garden. Today, the city councilors supported the construction. The estimated cost of the project is 89.4 million crowns excluding VAT. The contractor is expected to complete the construction in 18 months. The city hall will now announce an open tender.
The project includes the construction of ticket counters, a refreshment building with an outdoor terrace, and social facilities. After the construction is completed, visitors will approach the greenhouse via outdoor stairs. Individuals with reduced mobility will overcome a ten-meter elevation difference using an elevator, as the limited space does not allow for the construction of sloping ramps. The land where the tropical greenhouse is located will be visually separated from the street by landscaping.
A new entrance area is also planned at the north entrance to the botanical garden. The upcoming complex of buildings, costing 284.2 million crowns, will include a parking garage, a visitor center, a library with a study room, a lecture hall, a restaurant with a café, restrooms, and an administrative building for the directorate.
The planned entrance complexes will be located at the sites of the current entrances. The Fata Morgana greenhouse is separated from the botanical garden area, and there are no services offered nearby except for social facilities.
The northern entrance from K Pazderkám Street is to become the main entrance to the botanical garden after the service expansion. The aim is to redirect some visitors from the southern entrance, which is located near the heavily trafficked Trojská Street. Visitors can also access the botanical garden through four self-service entrances.
The Prague botanical garden has been led since last year by Bohumil Černý, who was appointed after the dismissal of director Oldřich Vacek. The city leadership has repeatedly tried to find a new director for the contributory organization but has canceled the tender several times because no suitable candidate applied. In October, the councilors canceled the tender announced in June. According to the deputy mayor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD), next year the city leadership will evaluate the work of the appointed director and either confirm him in the position or announce another tender.
