Lednice (Břeclavsko) - A large-scale renovation of the castle stables has been completed in Lednice. For ten million crowns, conservationists restored the façade and statues on the western wing of this building. This was reported today by the castle curator Ivana Holásková. She reminded that last October a tourist center was opened in the southern wing and central part of the stables. The restoration of these two parts of the stables cost half a billion crowns.
"The renovation of the façade of the western wing was the last project associated with the overall restoration of the castle stables. Funding for this work was provided to us by the Ministry of Culture," said the curator.
The stables are larger than the neighboring Lednice Castle, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. They were nicknamed the Palace of Horses and were previously home to the highly regarded breed of horses - the Lednice stallions. These animals were intended for the royal riding schools. However, the breed became extinct in the first half of the 20th century.
There are apartments in the western wing of the stables. Its central and southern parts were previously neglected. The center that has been created in this part of the building presents tourists with the Lednice-Valtice area as a landscape shaped into the form of an English park, which, apart from the Lednice and Valtice castles, also features other significant monuments.
The restoration of the southern and central parts of the stables was the most complicated. It cost half a billion; 85% of the costs were covered by the EU, and the rest was paid by the Czech Republic. In connection with the project, there were claims that it was overpriced. However, none of the inspections proved this. The renovation of the stables in Lednice was one of the most expensive heritage restoration projects in the modern history of the state.
