Prague - A new gazebo will be built in the Kunratice Forest in Prague, along the street Na Ovčíně. It will replace the original shelter, which is in unsatisfactory condition. The gazebo will be constructed by workers from the Prague organization Lesy hlavního města Prahy (LHMP), which manages part of the forest. According to information on the organization’s website, the total cost for the restoration of the gazebo is expected to be around one million crowns.
"The forest gazebo has been in very poor technical condition for quite some time and has long failed to attract visitors to sit and relax. Therefore, the crumbling foundation slab, unsightly wooden structure of the outer shell, and dilapidated roof should be replaced by a new building by the end of July," said LHMP spokesperson Petra Fišerová.
Workers from Lesy Prahy started the demolition of the original so-called Great Gazebo in the eastern part of Kunratice Forest in mid-May. The new gazebo, which will be created according to the design of architects from the Sféra studio, will have the same floor plan as the previous shelter and will stand on a concrete base. The wooden structures and interior fittings of the gazebo will be produced and subsequently installed by workers from a carpentry shop operated by the city organization in Hloubětín. Compared to the original gazebo, the outer walls of the new structure are designed to be more open, which should allow more light into the interior.
The territory of the capital city of Prague contains nearly 5000 hectares of forests, including private ones, which is about ten percent of the city’s total area. Of that, 2900 hectares are owned by Prague and managed by Lesy hlavního města Prahy, a company established and owned by the city. The LHMP was founded in 1992 and employs about 240 people. The company cares for not only forests but also gardens, parks, and waterways in the metropolis. Kunratice Forest is the largest forest owned by Prague, with 284 hectares of it in its possession.
