Ivančice - In Ivančice, near Brno, work will begin on Monday to reconstruct part of Palackého Square in front of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The city will pay 14 million crowns for it, and thanks to the repairs, the cracked asphalt and unattractive market stalls will disappear. Instead, there will be period cobblestones, color-coded differently from the other part of the square, said Mayor Milan Buček to ČTK.

Archaeologists have already conducted a survey near the church and found several human remains, as there used to be a cemetery here in the past. "Now we can start digging. The same company that also reconstructed the square in Znojmo and in Velká Bíteš is doing our square. We visited both places, and I believe we will have a nice square," said Buček.

The spaces for vendors should not completely disappear, but the unattractive metal stalls will no longer be there, and the stock of cheap textiles and similar items should vanish as well. "The stalls will be nice, as the space deserves. We should have it completed by spring," said Buček.

The second phase also includes the reconstruction of the square behind the church, which, however, has not yet been prepared in detail. "This will take place in at least two years. Until then, we want to finish the sewage system and adjust the affected streets. Unless a funding opportunity arises. We will see how it goes," said Buček.

Ivančice has nearly 10,000 inhabitants and is an old town founded in the 13th century. The square features well-preserved medieval burgher houses, and the historic core is a protected urban heritage zone. The Gothic church dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
