Bohumín - In the center of Bohumín in the Karviná region, an extensive eight-month reconstruction of the public space in the housing estate between Poděbradova and Alešova streets near the pedestrian zone is in its final stages. Thanks to the modernization, the area will not only have new sidewalks and playgrounds but also parking spaces. The city will pay nearly 11 million crowns for the transformation, as stated by city hall spokesperson Lucie Balcarová. "Two years ago, the local tower blocks underwent total repairs and new facades; now, after many long years of project preparations, we can finally start the reconstruction of public areas. It took us over three years to agree with network owners on their relocations and to address the comments from private property owners. Without that, the entire reconstruction could not have taken place," reminded mayor Petr Vícha (ČSSD). The old asphalt sidewalks have been replaced with new paved paths, and completely new sidewalks have been created in the places where worn paths were. Two children's playgrounds have also been added in the inner block for both smaller and larger children.
"We have installed elements on the playground that we do not yet have in Bohumín. A specialty is, for example, a double swing with a secured seat for infants or a small sandbox with a lockable cover. Ten benches have also been added around the playgrounds," added Adriana Dudás from the development and investment department. The reconstruction will also facilitate parking, as two parking lots with a capacity for 40 cars have been created on site. "The construction work is nearing completion. Three containers stands are already completed, two of which are covered. New trees have also been planted, and the area has received new public lighting with energy-saving LED lights. Only the parking lot and access roads to the buildings and parking spaces need to be paved, the landscaping needs to be completed, grass needs to be planted, and platforms for wheelchair users need to be installed at the tower blocks so they can access the buildings without problems," said Dudás. Everything is to be completed by the end of October.
Further regeneration of the public space is being completed by workers in the Bohumín part of Skřečoň on Mládežnická and Dělnická streets. New parking spaces and a children's playground will be created there. The sidewalks and lighting will also be updated. The city will pay 3.8 million crowns for this regeneration, which will also last until the end of October.
