Brno - The Lednice-Valtice area in southern Moravia is one of the two Czech heritage sites promoted by UNESCO on the new web portal "World Heritage Journeys." A total of 34 sites from 19 European countries were selected for the platform. The administration of the castle in Valtice announced this in a press release. The Lednice-Valtice area has been on the UNESCO list since 1996.

The second Czech site promoted on the new website is the castle and castle gardens in Kroměříž. This site was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1998.

The World Heritage Journeys project was launched on the occasion of World Heritage Days. Representatives of the Lednice-Valtice area worked on the content for the special website in collaboration with UNESCO and National Geographic for 18 months.

“Our goal is to change the way people travel. We want people to stay longer in individual destinations, experience the local culture and environment, and thus get to know and appreciate the values of the given World Heritage site more,” stated Mechtild Rössler, director of the World Heritage Centre at UNESCO.

The page mapping European heritage journeys categorizes sites into four groups. People can explore Royal Europe, Ancient Europe, Romantic Europe, and Underground Europe. The area between the castles of Lednice and Valtice is classified among the sites of Romantic Europe.

“Creating the website took us more than a year. We aimed to ensure that it sensitively supports tourism in our area while also presenting the area accurately to foreign tourists and increasing worldwide awareness of Lednice, Valtice, and the entire area. It is a great honor for the Lednice-Valtice area to be included in this project, as only 34 of all European UNESCO sites were selected, and we are only two from the entire Czech Republic,”
stated Lenka Beránková from Valtice Castle, who is responsible for the content of the new pages. The second Czech site is the castle and castle gardens in Kroměříž, which are included among the Royal Circle sites.

The launch of the website is set to support a massive advertising campaign in North America and China throughout 2019.
