Terezín (Litoměřice) - The Terezín city hall will prepare a document for the government by the end of the year, proposing what to do with the empty buildings that have remained in the city after the army's departure. The city reached this agreement with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Vondra. Mayor Růžena Čechová told ČTK today that there are eight large complexes with a number of buildings that are empty.
According to Čechová, Terezín wants to pay for pre-project documentation, so the buildings are prepared for institutions or other investors. Two complexes, Hannoverská Barracks and Kavalír, already have their rescue almost assured. The first is supposed to house the archive of security services, while in the second, the Ústí Region plans to establish a cultural center focusing on the Holocaust.
Čechová hopes that other state institutions, such as the Ministry of Defense, will also be interested in the empty buildings. According to Vondra's assistant, Eva Břeňová, a government meeting could take place in Terezín in the spring of next year, where the issues of the city would be discussed. Vondra stated in August this year that he would like to invite the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margot Wallström, to Terezín, who in the past promised to help with the renewal of the city.
The original plan of the government, the city, and the European Commission envisioned Terezín becoming a university city. However, the government decided to withdraw from the project last summer as it proved to be unrealistic. A problem was also the approximately 13 billion crowns that building the campus would cost. According to Čechová, the emerging plan for the city's renewal includes about 17 smaller projects.
