České Budějovice - The construction of the multifunctional hall in České Budějovice could begin next year. The estimated costs are 261 million crowns. Architect Martin Krupauer presented the hall project to the representatives today. The building is expected to replace the multi-sport hall, which no longer meets the needs.

"The fundamental change is that the project includes two identical sports areas. The current hall has only one playing surface," said Krupauer. The spectator capacity should also increase. It depends on the activity for which the space will be used at a given time. For example, volleyball matches could accommodate up to 2250 spectators. If a boxing match were held in the new hall, it could be seen by nearly 3000 spectators.

The new multifunctional hall will be located near the confluence of the Malše and Vltava rivers, close to the city center, at the same site as the current multi-sport hall. "It is an advantage for České Budějovice that people can find sports facilities like a swimming pool, an athletics stadium, an ice rink, or just the hall, in close proximity to the center," said Krupauer.

The new facility will serve for sports and cultural events. The ceiling will also be raised, which is one of the deficiencies of the multi-sport hall. In it, the ceiling is only nine meters above the playing surface in some places, which does not meet the requirements for international volleyball matches. Volleyball is one of the traditional sports in České Budějovice. The men's club Jihostroj has been winning the highest domestic competition in recent years and competes in European cups. The ceiling of the new hall should be 12 meters high above the playing surface.

The construction costs will probably be covered by the city. The current coalition, consisting of ANO, ČSSD, ODS, and KDU-ČSL, aims to initiate the project within this electoral term, which ends in the autumn of next year.
