Brno - Director Julius Ševčík has completed filming the movie The Glass Room based on the novel by British author Simon Mawer. The author was inspired by the Tugendhat Villa in Brno, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Filmmakers began shooting at the villa in March. The premiere of the film, which is being produced in a Czech-Slovak co-production, is scheduled for spring 2019, announced Uljana Donátová from the film's media representation, as reported by ČTK.
The main role has been given to Carice van Houten from the Netherlands, known from the series Game of Thrones and the war drama Valkyrie. The other protagonist, Hanna Alström, has been seen by Czech audiences in two sequels of the successful action-comedy Kingsman. The director has also cast Danes Claes Bang and Roland Møller. The Czech and Slovak acting scene includes Karel Roden, Jana Plodková, Karel Dobrý, Marián Mitaš, Zuzana Fialová, and Martin Hofmann.
The editor of The Glass Room will be the renowned Polish creator Jaroslaw Kaminski, who is credited with editing the Oscar-winning film Ida, Donátová stated. Kaminski is a graduate of the Prague FAMU. The music for The Glass Room will be composed by the Spaniard Javier Navarrete, an Oscar nominee for Pan's Labyrinth.
The book The Glass Room received a nomination for the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2009. The main storyline is a fictional love story set in Brno, primarily in a villa named Landauer in both the book and the film. According to Donátová, the film tells the story of people whose lives, love, and friendships were marked by the dramatic events of the 20th century.
Based on the book, a play was also created in Brno, which was added to the repertoire of the City Theatre three years ago, directed and dramatized by Stanislav Moša.
The villa of spouses Greta and Fritz Tugendhat from 1929 and 1930 was designed by the renowned Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. From 2010 to 2012, the villa underwent a preservation restoration, returning to its appearance from the 1930s. The interior features exact replicas of the original furnishings. The glass wall of the villa provides a view of the garden and the city.
