Brno – Today, the city council approved the final version of the Brno Building Regulations. The document is expected to ensure quality construction and cultivated public spaces. It accommodates the creation of urban avenues and significant streets, stipulating their minimum width with sufficient space for pedestrians and cyclists. It has also unblocked the construction of apartments, especially in the center, where it was not possible to build sufficient parking. This was stated to journalists by the councilor for urban planning, Petr Bořecký (ANO).

According to the city hall, the regulations tailored for Brno take into account the needs of a large city and set more precise standards and requirements than those stated in national regulations. "They emphasize both the character of the construction and public spaces to prevent the emergence of excesses that are not conducive to urban development. They also specify how many parking spaces must be part of the construction. For example, in the tight center, no parking spaces may need to be created, as we are trying to eliminate cars," said Bořecký.

Newly developed are also urban planning rules that define types of streets, delineate construction and street lines, and determine the manner of building within construction blocks and their relationship to public spaces. "Construction in currently difficult-to-develop gaps will also be simplified due to the relaxation of sunlight requirements. Above all, thanks to the regulations, it is possible to propose meaningful urban construction," added Jan Tesárek, director of the Brno City Architect's Office, which was responsible for the preparation of the document along with the city hall. Not least, the document further supports the planting of street tree rows and the use of so-called blue-green infrastructure, including the retention and infiltration of rainwater.

The issuance of the regulations is enabled by the new Building Act. For all builders, designers, and authorities involved in the permitting process, they will come into effect on July 1, coinciding with the new Building Act. Interested parties will find them on the city website and the architect's office in the first half of June. In the future, they should also be published in printed form.
