Ostrava - In July, the reconstruction of the historic buildings of the so-called Trojhalí in the area of the former Karolina coke plant in the city center may begin. The project originally estimated that the renovation of the buildings into new spaces for social, cultural, and sports activities would cost over 300 million crowns. However, in the tender for the construction contractor, the price was lowered to approximately 149 million crowns, the mayor Petr Kajnar (ČSSD) said to reporters today. The heritage-protected buildings of the former power plant and central office, collectively referred to as Trojhalí, are the only structures remaining in the area of the former industrial site. In their immediate vicinity, a new shopping and entertainment center, Forum Nová Karolina, opened in March, and new apartments and office spaces are also being developed nearby. Companies in the tender for their reconstruction requested between 149 and 231 million crowns. The historic buildings will be renovated according to the design of architect Josef Pleskot, who is also involved in the transformation of the Lower Vítkovice area in Ostrava. The majority of the costs will be funded by European Union money, and the renovation is expected to be completed next year during the holidays. The project plans to create a kind of covered square from the former central office, which has an area approximately the same as the central Masaryk Square. In the heritage-protected buildings, not only sports events but also exhibitions, concerts, and markets will be held. An ice rink could operate at the site in the winter, and two gyms for public use are also planned.
