Ostrava - The leadership of Ostrava wants to change the access to the observation tower of the New Town Hall. Tourists currently use an internal elevator that is freely accessible from the town hall building, which they can freely move around even outside of office hours. This year, officials recorded an attempt to steal metal railings, so the city will commission a study to provide a solution for separate access to the tower. This was stated by Ostrava's mayor, Petr Kajnar (ČSSD), to ČTK.
An urban architectural study costing a maximum of 125,000 crowns will show whether visitors could access the tower in the future through a separate entrance or a new outdoor elevator. "We want to explore all options for improving access while also preventing potential thefts. This year, someone even started dismantling railings where we have no cameras," said Kajnar.
He added that controlled access to the town hall tower could be resolved either technically with cameras and security sensors or organizationally with security patrols or municipal guards. "That would, of course, be less costly. Nonetheless, we want to know other alternatives as well. We are considering that the tower could be made accessible by an external glass elevator if the conservationists agree," said the mayor.
According to him, the new access to the observation tower is the first step in modernizing the entire town hall and its surroundings, which currently lacks facilities such as bus parking. "They can't fit into the underground garages, so tourists who come to see the view have to walk about a kilometer," said Kajnar.
He believes that the passage under the Pioneers Bridge, which connects the area behind the town hall with the waterfront in front of the regional court, also deserves renovation. "It is not dignified, it smells, and homeless people gather there. The town hall itself is also becoming a disgrace, which should once again shine after 75 years. I have forgotten about it due to all the industrial zones," he said.
According to him, the renovation of the town hall and its surroundings will take place in phases over five to ten years. "I can't estimate the total costs yet, but we would need an approximate estimate of 200 million crowns just for the town hall building," added the mayor.
