Prague - Prague councilors today discussed how the city could save on the construction of the Blanka tunnel. The city plans to construct only the basic version of the ventilation structures, will not repair the bastion at the Powder Bridge, nor will it build the so-called canopy in Letná. On the contrary, it plans to reconstruct Letenské Square and cancel the detour route along Myslbek Street. The results of discussions with city districts, TSK, and the crisis management department were acknowledged by the council today. This was stated to journalists by the Deputy Mayor Karel Březina (CSSD).
"We have removed things from the construction that are above standard," said Březina. "On one hand, we agreed on savings today, and on the other hand, on certain additional costs. I will not specify the exact final sum at this moment; it is still a matter of further negotiations with the contractors," he added.
According to Březina, negotiations with contractors will now follow, after which the council will address the estimated costs for the entire construction. This should be discussed by the June assembly. The material should also determine the expected completion date.
The Blanka tunnel was originally supposed to cost including VAT 21.2 billion crowns for the construction part and 4.2 billion crowns for technologies. An additional 1.58 billion crowns were supposed to be spent according to contracts on surveys or engineering and design activities. However, the city management found that it would have to pay nearly 38 billion crowns for the construction. The increase is attributed to inflation, more expensive technologies, but also to so-called additional work, i.e., orders beyond the original scope of construction.
Currently, the cladding of the ventilation structures, the repair of the bastion, or the construction of the canopy—which according to the project is supposed to cover the parking lot above the underground intersection in Letná and separate the green space of the orchards from the future tunnel—should not take place.
"This doesn’t mean that these things cannot be completed in the future; it is purely a matter of the city’s financial capabilities," noted Březina.
The capital city, on the other hand, plans a complete reconstruction of Letenské Square for 70 million crowns. By the end of the year, Patočkova Street will be opened, and the detour route along Myslbek Street will be canceled. "Returning to these investments in the future would be significantly more expensive," the deputy added.
The technology of the tunnel will also change. "It is a necessity; technologies become morally outdated quickly, and what was designed in the documentation at the beginning of the last decade is already outdated," he explained the increase in the price of the tunnel in this item.
