Brno - The space in front of the Brno train station should start changing in the fall, if granite is available on the market. If not, it will be transformed by spring. The city will pay nearly 12 million crowns for the reconstruction, and the municipal company Brněnské komunikace only needs to sign a contract with the selected firm. In the area that thousands of pedestrians pass through daily, barriers will be reduced, and the city will significantly limit car traffic, the city hall stated in a press release. With more than a four-year delay, the proposal from the previous city leadership will thus be realized. The work is expected to be completed within three months.

The Brno pre-train station area is perceived not only by Brno residents as one of the most unfriendly places in Brno, where pedestrians face a huge number of barriers. In the past, railings were added between the tram islands and the sidewalks around the Letmo department store and the train station building, which were intended to guide pedestrians into the underpass. Many people, however, cross haphazardly over the tracks and the road.

On the northern side, between the Letmo department store and the mouth of Masarykova Street and the tram stop, railings will be removed and the road will be raised almost to the level of the sidewalk and the island, creating a pedestrian zone throughout the area. Only cast iron posts will separate the island and the sidewalk from the roadway.

At the point where pedestrians transition from the tram island to the train hall, the road will also be raised to the height of the sidewalk, and workers will remove part of the railing. Thus, pedestrians should be able to move barrier-free between the trams and the sidewalks. The asphalt covering of the sidewalks will be replaced with granite paving, and benches will be added to the adjusted area.

Additionally, a large number of drivers will no longer be able to pass around the train station. Traffic signs will prohibit turning left from the viaduct towards Letmo, and in the opposite direction, it will not be possible to turn left onto Benešova Street while passing by the train station building, only to the right under the viaduct. And permanent parking spaces near the station will be replaced with turnaround spaces with limited parking time.
