Brno - The neglected space in front of the Brno train station will start to be renovated next year. The city hall will spend approximately 30 million crowns on the works, Deputy Mayor Robert Kotzian announced today in a press release. The area in front of the station building, the exit from the underpasses at the tram stops, as well as the tram stops themselves and the confusion for pedestrians and drivers has long been a target of criticism from residents and some opposition politicians.
"We already issued a tender once, but about a month ago we canceled it. Two companies withdrew and the offer from the third was too expensive," Kotzian told ČTK.
In the first phase, sidewalks will be repaired to make the space for people more comprehensible than before. The city will also replace benches with stainless steel ones and will change the trash cans. "Although it's a small area, we will plant a tree in front of the station, where there will be a resting place," said Kotzian.
Cyclists will receive bike racks, as they currently just tie their bikes to railings. These are therefore, especially in spring and summer, surrounded by bicycles.
In the second phase, new shelters will be created above the exits from the underpasses, the tram stops will be raised for easier boarding, and the developed study also addresses crossing between the stops and the space in front of the station. "A new information center will also serve visitors to Brno right in front of the station building," stated Kotzian.
Thus, Brno should gain at least a partially dignified gateway for entering the city. In recent years, very little investment has been made in these areas, especially considering that Brno is still dealing with the location of a new station. It is uncertain whether it will be in the center or in the Zvonařka area. According to various urban planning experts, the entire area in front of the station is confusing and stressful for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
