Prostějov - The Prostějov city hall has reached an agreement with the Czech Railways Administration (SŽ) on the possible transfer of the historic train station building at the Prostějov-local station, which has been deteriorating without use for several years and faced the threat of demolition. The city could obtain the property free of charge if the agreed conditions are met. The transaction still needs to be approved by the SŽ board, the government, and the Prostějov city council. Councilors are expected to vote on the transfer of the station building from the late 19th century in June. This was announced today by the mayor's deputy Jiří Rozehnal (ANO). He was not willing to comment on the possible use of the building, which was constructed at the end of the 19th century.

"The negotiations from SŽ were maximally accommodating. Both sides were interested in the same thing, that is, a meaningful use of the site for which the railway operator has no future use," stated Rozehnal. Following the approval of the transaction, the removal of the original railway technologies from the station building may follow. Then the reconstruction of the station building, tentatively planned for 2027 and 2028, will take place.

The historic station building stands on a single-track regional line connecting the Prostějov and Chornice stations, and it was commissioned in 1889. The management of SŽ announced several years ago that when preparing the reconstruction of this railway station, it was also considering the demolition of the old station building from the late 19th century and the construction of a smaller facility. This information caused considerable discontent in Prostějov at that time, and a petition was being prepared for its preservation. The city has been negotiating with SŽ for a long time about the conditions for transferring the station building. The anticipated costs for the reconstruction of the building and its surroundings, which could reach into the tens of millions of koruna, also played an important role in the decision-making process.

SŽ is preparing the reconstruction of the Prostějov-local railway station, which includes the replacement of the track and the repair of platforms and safety devices, including the laying of new cables. The technologies necessary for the operation of the station will be relocated to new facilities adjacent to the historic station building. Builders have already demolished the locomotive depot, turntable, water tower, and office buildings in the station area. A relaxation and residential zone is planned to be created on the land where the former turntable stood.
