Prague - The cable car from Podbaba to Bohnice will likely be prepared by the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) for the Prague council. Today, the councilors made a decision on this, which still needs to be confirmed by the representatives. The project was originally initiated by the investment department of the city hall. The cable car could be in operation by 2025 and aims to provide a direct connection between Prague 8 and Prague 6 until the planned tram line is created. According to estimates, the cable car will cost around 1.5 billion crowns.
According to the approved resolution, a technical study should be created regarding the plan, which will also take into account other related projects, such as the planned tram line from Podbaba to Suchdol or parking garages in Bohnice and Podbaba. DPP will subsequently announce a public tender for the construction of the cable car.
"DPP's task as part of the project is also to prepare an architectural competition," said Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Sobě) after the council meeting. According to him, the competition will determine the design of the stations and poles and their integration into the landscape.
The cable car will consist of three stops; in addition to those in Podbaba and Bohnice, there will also be one near the zoo. The journey from Bohnice to Dejvice is expected to be shortened by almost half an hour using the cable car. The project is currently being assessed for its environmental impacts (EIA), and a necessary change to the zoning plan is being prepared.
The cable car will provide transportation until the tram line is established, including a new bridge over the Vltava River, which may take a long time. The construction is to be preceded by a line from Bohnice to Kobylisy and between Podbaba and the Czech University of Life Sciences campus in Suchdol. Following that, a bridge to Troja will be built, and only then the line to Bohnice.
The previous leadership of the city hall proposed the cable car project. The then councilor for transportation, Petr Dolínek (ČSSD), also suggested a cable car from the Vltava River to Letná, but that did not come to fruition. In previous electoral periods, there was talk of a cable car from Smíchov to Pankrác, over Prokop Valley, or from Holešovice to Troja. Currently, a funicular operates in Petřín, and another one is in the zoo in Troja.
