Prague - The capital city plans to build a tram line connecting Podbaba across a new bridge in Troja with Bohnice. However, as a temporary solution, a cable car with a similar route will be built, which aims to provide a direct connection between Prague 6 and 8 before the tram is completed. The plan was approved today by Prague councilors. According to earlier estimates, the cable car will cost about 1.5 billion crowns and could be completed within five years. The city also plans to connect Bohnice by tram to Kobylisy and Podbaba to Suchdol.

Although Bohnice is just a short distance away from Prague 6, there is currently no direct connection between them. According to the approved material, most people currently take the metro through the center, which city officials consider inconvenient and burdensome for the transport system. Therefore, a long-term plan for a tram connection between both city parts is in place, linked to the development of the tram network on both sides of the Vltava River.

In constructing the new bridge across the Vltava, it would be necessary to bore a nearly kilometer-long tunnel through rock between Troja and Bohnice, making it a complex project. The construction plan has been divided into several phases, with the tunnel expected to be built last after 2030. Before the construction of the tram line between Bohnice and Podbaba, the transport company should also build tram lines connecting the Bohnice housing estate to the metro in Kobylisy and linking Podbaba and the Dejvická metro to Suchdol, where a large number of students from the Czech University of Life Sciences commute.

Given the anticipated length of construction for all routes, the city hall intends to build a cable car as a temporary solution, which, according to the material, could be completed in five years. An environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the cable car project has already been initiated.

According to the EIA documentation, the cable car route will run from the public transport terminal in Podbaba across the river and Císařský Island to a stop in Troja, which will be located next to the zoo. Then it will ascend to Bohnice to the station near the Krakov shopping center. The journey from Bohnice to Dejvice should be shortened by almost half an hour using the cable car. The air-conditioned cabins will be supported by three cables on five steel pillars with concrete foundations at a height between 25 and 44 meters.

According to information presented in October at the city hall's transport committee, the cost of constructing the cable car is estimated at 1.5 billion crowns. The ride is expected to last seven minutes, and the cabins should be able to transport 2,000 passengers per hour at intervals of less than a minute.

The plan for the cable car construction was proposed by the previous city administration. The then transport councilor Petr Dolínek (ČSSD) also suggested a cable car project from the Vltava to Letná, but that did not materialize. In previous electoral periods, there were discussions about a cable car from Smíchov to Pankrác, through Prokopské Valley, or from Holešovice to Troja. Currently, there is a funicular operating in Petřín and another one in the zoo in Troja.
