PŘÍBRAM - The Příbram city hall is preparing for a large-scale reconstruction of the city theater. The work will begin in June. The start of the new theater season will be pushed to October 1 due to this. The small stage and cinema, which are part of the theater, could be put into operation as early as September, said mayor Ivan Fuksa to ČTK.

During the modernization, a general reconstruction of all utility networks will take place, interior modifications, reconstruction of social facilities, and the cinema and theater will be painted. The city would like to acquire new seats for the halls, but they are not part of the project.
Příbram will take out a loan of 30 million crowns for the theater's renovation. The total costs will emerge from a tender for a construction contractor that the city will announce in the near future. According to deputy mayor Ivan Šedivý, the project documentation will be completed by the end of March.
It is unlikely that the repairs will be completed during the theater holidays. However, the main work should be finished before the start of the new season. The reconstruction would then continue in such a way that the operation of the theater would not be disrupted, Šedivý said.
The city wants to discuss possible adjustments to the repertoire with the artistic director of the theater. According to Fuksa, quite a few performances are staged on the small stage, which should be repaired before the start of the season. The reconstruction of the large stage will take longer; its performances could perhaps be adjusted for more intimate spaces.
The Příbram theater was built according to a design by architect Václav Hilský and opened in 1961. Since then, it has undergone virtually no changes; it has not gone through any reconstruction. The city wants to advocate for it to be declared a national cultural monument.
