Přerov

Přerov - The Přerov Town Hall is preparing to repair František Rasch Square. The reason is the approaching centenary of the death of this revolutionary and sailor of the Austrian naval fleet, after whom the square is named. The city estimates the costs of the revitalization at 1.25 million crowns, informed CTK spokesperson Lenka Chalupová. The city has been preparing the reconstruction of the square for several years, and the project will be based on an 11-year-old study.

The square is to take on a new appearance by February 11, 2018, when it will be one hundred years since Rasch's execution. The monument with his bust, which has been listed as a cultural monument since 1987, will also undergo restoration. "František Rasch was one of the leaders of the sailors' revolt in the Bay of Kotor - and at the anniversary of his death, we plan a commemorative act. However, the square is neglected, and we want to give it a more pleasant character. The city council approved the start of project preparation," said Deputy Mayor Petr Měřínský (ANO).

The urban study for the transformation of the square has been with the municipality for 11 years; it includes a planting proposal and a motif of sea waves in the pavement, which are meant to remind of the events involving sailor František Rasch from Přerov. The mentioned motifs will be used by the city during the park reconstruction. However, according to Měřínský, the project from 2005 will not be fully utilized, as its costs were estimated at 3.5 million crowns. "We plan to repair sidewalks, revitalize greenery, treat lawns, adjust flowerbeds, reconstruct container stands, replace unsightly concrete benches and other furniture," stated Ivana Pinkasová from the Přerov municipality.

The park is triangular in shape and covers an area of 3,513 square meters. Currently, it is not highly sought after by people, who mostly use it only to shorten their journey. The park is adjacent to another one located at Svobody Square, which the town hall also plans to revitalize in the future.

Rasch was born in 1889 in Přerov. He was one of the leaders of the revolt in the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, which began on February 1, 1918, on the armored cruiser Sankt Georg. Several thousand sailors participated in it. The command of the Austro-Hungarian fleet suppressed the revolt and had its four leaders, including Rasch, executed. The reason for the revolt was dissatisfaction with inhumane conditions on the ships.
