Prague wants to deepen the Prague Ring Road and build tunnels

Prague - The Prague City Hall prefers that the road be depressed and that tunnels be created in several sections during the completion of the Prague Ring Road between Březiněves and Satalice. This follows from a document approved by the Prague councilors today. The city will send its position to the Directorate of Roads and Highways (ŘSD), which is preparing the construction of the ring road. It is currently unclear which variant will ultimately be selected. According to current plans, the Prague Ring Road is expected to measure over 80 kilometers, with about half already in operation.

"The preferred tunnel variant received a positive assessment from the ŘSD from an economic perspective and has a minimal negative impact on residents living in its vicinity. We will continue cooperating with the ŘSD to ensure that the construction of the ring road can be realized as quickly as possible while minimizing harm to the affected areas," stated Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Our Own).

The original route proposal for the section designated 520 from 2009 planned for the road to be on the surface. Subsequently, two additional variants were developed. All have the same route, but the new two differ from the original due to the depression or tunnels.

The depressed variant means that wherever possible, the road will be led below the surface, on average by up to eight meters. The third variant, in addition to the depression, also proposes the construction of three tunnels. The first tunnel, Vinoř, would be 1.3 kilometers long, Veleň would measure 450 meters, and Třeboradice would be two kilometers.

Once completed, the outer Prague Ring Road is expected to measure around 83 kilometers according to current plans, with about half currently in operation. The missing section is from the D1 highway to Běchovice, as well as the entire northern part from Ruzyně through Suchdol, Březiněves to Černý Most. The radial roads that are supposed to connect it with the inner city ring road being built by Prague are also not completed. The construction of the Prague Ring Road has long been opposed by local authorities in the northern part of the capital.
