Jablonec nad Nisou - The work on the restoration of the town hall facade in Jablonec nad Nisou should be completed during the summer. The last, northern side is almost finished, and the entrance to the Cinema Radnice still needs to be completed. Everything will be entirely finished by August, said Jana Hajná, spokesperson for the magistrate, to ČTK today. The city started the restoration of the town hall facade in 2016, which will cost a total of 25 million crowns. Jablonec has also invested additional millions in restoring the interiors of the historically protected building, gradually returning it to its original form from the 1930s.
The Jablonec town hall is a significant building of Czechoslovak interwar architecture. It was constructed between 1931 and 1933 according to the design of architect Karel Winter. The city has been gradually restoring the building for nine years. The windows and interiors have already been renovated. The vestibule has received new lanterns that were previously missing because there was no money left for them during the construction of the town hall. Two lounges have also returned to their original form, and last year, the council chamber underwent an expensive reconstruction.
This year's repair schedule has been shortened a bit thanks to favorable weather. "Last year's exceptionally beautiful weather allowed us to start the reconstruction of the northern side of the facade earlier. Over the winter, the plaster core matured, and now the workers have applied the final colored plaster to it. The work is now focused on finishing the appearance around the entrance to the Cinema Radnice. The light advertising of the cinema will also undergo changes. There will no longer be a strip, but we will prepare everything for the installation of neon lights on the sides," said Petr Mikulášek from the city's investment construction department.
The 51-meter high town hall tower was also restored in recent years, and last year it received a lightning rod topped with a decorative onion made according to the original documentation. Since May, the observation deck from the town hall tower has been open to tourists on weekdays. On clear days, one can see as far as the Ještěd ridge, the Jizera Mountains, the Černostudniční ridge, or the Císařský kámen lookout tower. "During the summer, we would like to lead tourists back from the observation deck to the newly renovated council chamber and lounges, we will see if people are interested," said Radana Schaeferová from the Jablonec Cultural and Information Centre, which organizes the tours, to ČTK.
