Jablonec nad Nisou - Jablonec nad Nisou is preparing for a large-scale reconstruction of the town hall. The seventy-five-year-old building, which is the most significant functionalist monument of the Liberec region and currently serves only as an office, will be transformed into an administrative, information, and cultural center for the city. The city wants the building to become the gateway to the Jizera Mountains, said Ondřej Frič, director of the finance and property department, to the Czech News Agency today. The Prague firm VPÚ Deco is already working on a reconstruction study for the city office, a structural and historical survey, and a preliminary feasibility study. The city will pay for the preparatory materials, which will be available within three months, with a budget of 7.5 million crowns. Additional millions will be needed for project and execution documentation. The reconstruction of the town hall will cost hundreds of millions of crowns, and the city wants to obtain subsidies from the European Union and the state; its contribution could then represent just under a tenth of the costs. "Without subsidies, we would not be able to undertake the repairs; we want to utilize resources for the regeneration of city centers," noted Deputy Mayor Lukáš Pleticha. Through thorough preparation of the reconstruction, the city aims to avoid poor and insensitive interventions that could damage the monument. Builders in previous repairs wanted to save work, and as a result, the building retained its original valuable details. For example, the massive round table in the meeting room is hidden under chipboard panels, as are the stylish doors. Simultaneously with the restoration of the architectural details, the town hall aims to equip the office with new technologies. The new Jablonec town hall, which houses the city office, is a functionalist administrative building with a 51-meter high tower. The construction dates back to 1931 and 1932. At that time, 1,900 workers from local firms participated in its construction.
