Zlín - The Moravian River Basin Authority (PMO) has begun repairs on the Baťa Canal between the locks in Huštěnovice and Babice in the Uherské Hradiště region. The work will last until April of next year. It includes the restoration of navigation channel parameters and the repair and stabilization of the banks and dikes of the canal. The construction is funded by the State Transport Infrastructure Fund, with the state contributing 13.3 million crowns. Jana Kučerová from the external relations and marketing department of the state enterprise stated this in a press release today.
According to PMO's General Director Václav Gargulák, all work will be carried out from the left bank of the Baťa Canal. Therefore, it will not affect the right bank part of the dikes with the cycling path, and traffic on it will remain uninterrupted. Due to the reconstruction, there will be a temporary reduction in water level in the mentioned part of the navigation canal.
PMO has also started preparations for the upcoming season on the Baťa Canal. "One of the main tasks is to ensure the navigation channel parameters set by legislation. This involves maintaining the navigation depths across the entire width of the navigation channel, removing obstacles from the navigation channel, repairing bank protection, and marking the waterway with navigation signs," said Kučerová. According to her, most repairs and maintenance need to be done outside the navigation season, which complicates and prolongs the work.
The state enterprise completed repairs on the nearly 80-year-old bank protection of the Baťa Canal in the sections Vnorovy - Strážnice and Vnorovy - Veselí nad Moravou this spring. Due to construction work, last year's season had to end prematurely in these areas. Work was also done in the mentioned section between Huštěnovice and Babice, where, however, the contracting company failed to meet deadlines. PMO therefore returned to repairs here after the completion of this year's navigation season.
The Baťa Canal is a significant tourist attraction in the Zlín and South Moravian regions. According to the state enterprise, a record number of boats passed through the locks this season. On average, 3,526 boats passed through each staffed lock, which is 416 more than last year.
