Opava - The Opava Landscape Festival, which aims to revive public spaces in the Silesian city, will this time focus on revitalizing the swimming pool in the Municipal Gardens. On Saturday, August 27, a multi-genre event called Koupák will take place there, featuring performances by singers such as Klára Vytisková. Tomáš Kaplan announced this today on behalf of the organizers.
"We want to demonstrate that a swimming pool is not only suitable for recreation, but can also host cultural events, thereby attracting a larger group of visitors. Although it is an architectural gem and a place with an unparalleled atmosphere, unfortunately, fewer and fewer people are finding their way here," said one of the organizers, Jakub Hepp.
Throughout the day, a number of bands will perform as part of the program, which will also include expert lectures from architects and landscape designers focused on the history of the swimming pool and the possibilities for its future operation. For example, Sabina Křováková and the bands Naděje and Puding paní Elvisovej will be presented.
The Koupák festival follows previous successful events that took place as part of the Opava Landscape Festival, always in unconventional locations. Concerts have already been held, for instance, on Bird Hill in Sady svobody. The Náplavka event to revitalize the banks of the Opava River was also successful.
The three-month Landscape Festival focuses on landscape and public space. From May to September, it offers exhibitions, expert lectures, and musical festivals in various locations around the city. In the past three years, the showcase has been held in Prague and attracted tens of thousands of visitors, according to the organizers. Many locations in the city will feature installations created by leading Czech architects and artists during the festival.
Another goal of the festival is to revitalize urban public space. "We believe in uncovering the hidden potential of selected locations. Interventions and designs will bring new life to areas that are currently underutilized, and will attempt to find their solutions," stated Dalibor Halátek, the deputy mayor of Opava.
