Brno - The American musical Footloose, known from two film adaptations, made its debut on Czech theater stages today. With the subtitle Dance is Not a Crime, it was staged by students of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (JAMU). The first performance of the musical today ceremoniously marked the opening of the new theater building of JAMU on Orlí Street.

The theatrical musical Footloose was inspired by the successful film featuring Kevin Bacon, released in 1984. The story from an American small town was first performed on Broadway in 1998 and quickly became one of the most successful musical titles. The same material was re-adapted by filmmakers last year, again under the title Footloose.
The modernly equipped Theater on Orlí was built by JAMU for 343 million crowns. The building will primarily serve students specializing in opera and musicals. In November, students are preparing opera scenes Beauty and the Beast by Miloslav Ištvan and European Tourism by Josef Berg. Next year, they plan to focus on Bedřich Smetana's The Bartered Bride.
